It is our faith but it is still our choice.
As christians we are told to give it all to God. I agree with that statement but many forget one simple thing. Free will. They forget that faith is a word of action not a passive one.
God can lead us to so many good and great things, but when it comes down to going through that door we much make the decision to pick up our feet and step across the threshold.
I see this so much in the christian community. People flock to God but for the wrong reasons. They want something from him. They come because of what he can give. Look at when Jesus fed the 5,000. Those people didn’t come to follow him, they came to see his miracles and maybe get healed themselves, much like today. We want to take the responsibility off of us and place it on God. Many want to reduce God to a scapegoat of life.
God may lead you to great and wonderful things but if you are waiting for him to move your feet and step for you well I think you are sadly mistaken. I have heard people speak of circumstances in their lives and they pray for God to take it away to remove their thorn in the side. We see the examples of this from Paul and God did not remove it. Yet we expect him to do it for us. Things like this boggle my mind. Good christian people afraid to move. People that believe in God and have seen great things he has done in their lives yet afraid to fully trust.
When it comes down to it I am not sure if its mistrust or our own expectations that gets us in more trouble. Sometimes we are in the middle of a storm and we pray to be out of it but somewhere in our minds we think God will just remove it… poof… gone. Now seriously how silly is that. We are not 5 years old anymore yet many times our unspoken expectations are like this. It comes down to one thing. Our choice. God can put things in front of us over and over but at the end of the day you have to make a choice to step or not and that is on you.
The more people I talk to the more I see that there is general fear of the unknown. Fear of what might happen somewhere out there. When we let fear make our choices for you those blessings God has lined up for you will go wasted. When we fail to act on our faith we delay those God given blessings. Don’t get me wrong I understand there are things God protects us from by waiting and using caution, but I am finding that the vast majority are locked up in fear and making choices based on fear rather than Gods guidance. Let me spell it out for you. God will not always lead you to safety. God will not always lead you to comfort.
Growth from God comes from our reaching out in faith and trusting him when we see nothing or we have to reach through our fears to grab onto Him.
“Crowds of sick people—blind, lame, or paralyzed—lay on the porches.
One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?” “I can’t, sir,” the sick man said, “for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.” Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!””
Look at this mans reply to Jesus. “ I can’t sir”
Then look at Jesus’s reply.. “ Stand up, pick up your mat and walk.”
Think of how powerful that is. He doesn’t touch him, He doesn’t give him long instructions of how to do it or what it will look like. Simply STAND UP!!!
How many times has God asked us to pick up our mats and walk. But you see… it is still our choice in life to get up and walk or lay in the dirt and complain.
I want my faith to be great, huge and always expanding… does it? To be honest it does, then it shrinks and falters and grows some more. None of us are perfect but we have got to start making choices that show our faith not our focus on fear. God never works through fears that way. He is there to embolden us, to let that spirit that we all have inside of us grow and lead us even in the midst of fear and turmoil.
We each need to be picking up that mat and walk. To believe the things Jesus told us about living as a christian, leaving our mark of our faith in every turn of our life.
Living in fear and waiting for God to roll up your mat and move your feet for you is not how He told us it would be so why do we think that way?
Living boldly for God does not mean we will live a trouble free and perfect life either, so don’t even go down that road. But living boldly and taking risks for God are some of the things I think He is waiting on us to do. To show our trust in him to show out faith in him. So that when we way we believe we actually live a life that shows that not just lip service.
“Stand up, pick up your mat at walk.”!!!!! Start doing that today.
Another good verse for this is this one.
“So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.”
Ephesians 5:15-17 NLT
